Three years ago I conducted a survey looking at symptoms experienced by refluxers which was subsequently quoted in the Down With Acid book in the chapter on Extra-Oesophageal reflux.

I now wish to repeat the exercise having refined the data collection. There are actually 3 surveys. I would be grateful if you could select and complete the one (or two) relevant to you. It is a very short questionnaire with really just one question with only eight possible answers.

Those who are on acid suppressants, please complete this questionnaire.

For those not on acid suppressants, please complete this questionnaire.

If you have had anti-reflux surgery or other anti-reflux intervention, I would be grateful if you would complete whichever survey is relevant to your condition before the treatment and then complete this additional survey.

I hope the results will better inform the prevalence of extra-oesophageal symptoms and efficacy of acid suppressants and reflux reduction interventions on reflux.
I shall publish the results here in due course and use them in the second edition of the Down With Acid book.

Thank you for your time.

This descriptor is included in the survey:

PPIs include omeprazole (Prilosec / Losec), lansoprazole (Prevacid / Zoton), pantoprazole (Protonix / Protium), rabeprazole (Aciphex / Pariet), esomeprazole (Nexium), dexlansoprazole (Dexilant).

Medium dose = 20mg omeprazole = 30mg lansoprazole = 40mg pantoprazole = 20mg rabeprazole = 20mg esomeprazole = 30mg dexlansoprazole.

Low dose is anything below the above listed doses. High dose is anything higher.

The Survey for refluxers on PPIs has now exceeded its 100 response threshold. No more responses for this survey can be recorded. Thank you to all who took part.

However, the surveys for refluxers who donít take PPIs and those who have had anti-reflux treatment are still active if you meet their criteria.

Initial findings of refluxers taking acid suppressants:

83% on medium or high PPIs reported the following symptoms:

THROAT: Hoarseness, sore throat, loss of voice or throat clearing 68.75%

CHEST: Chronic cough or asthma like symptoms 47.92%

NOSE: Post nasal drip, poor sense of smell, sinustitis or catarrhal symptoms 51.04%

THROAT: Globus (feeling of lump in the throat) 52.08%

MOUTH: Tooth erosion 27.08%

MOUTH: Bad breath or bad taste in mouth 45.83%

EYES: Dry or gritty eyes 42.71%

EARS: Waxing, Glue Ear, Tinnitus or dizziness 50.00%

Total Respondents:†96† Skipped: 4

These results may be compared to the 2014 survey here.
